Malaysia Palm Oil Rises on Concern Supply May Not Keep Pace With Demand

(Bloomberg) -- Palm oil futures in Malaysia, the
world's largest grower last year, gained on concern that supply
may not keep pace with overseas demand for the tropical oil.

The Southeast Asian nation exported 799,579 metric tons of
bulk palm oil between May 1 and 20, compared with 789,644 tons
in the same period last month, Societe Generale de Surveillance
said in a report yesterday.

BOJ minutes show members watching land price rises

(Reuters) - "While prices of land are generally set in a way that is
consistent with expected returns, close attention should be paid
to asset price moves and their effect on economic activity," many
members were quoted as saying.




The nine-member board voted unanimously at the meeting to

Silicon Valley Stocks Reach Six-Year High, Led by Apple, Hewlett-Packard

(Bloomberg) -- An index of Silicon Valley stocks
reached a six-year high today, led by Apple Inc., Hewlett-
Packard Co. and Electronic Arts Inc.

The Bloomberg Silicon Valley Index, a price-weighted list
of companies with significant business in the region, gained
2.83, or 0.5 percent, to 599.56, after touching 603.38, its
highest since Nov. 8, 2000. Advancing stocks outnumbered those
that declined 25 to eight, with none unchanged.

NTT Sells 100 Billion Yen in Bonds at 13 Basis Points Above Sovereign Debt

(Bloomberg) -- Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp.,
Japan's largest phone company, sold 100 billion yen ($823 million)
in 10-year bonds after its debt rating was raised to the same
level as the nation's government debt.

Tokyo-based NTT priced the bonds to yield 14 basis points
more than sovereign debt with a similar maturity, said a banker at
Nomura Holdings Inc., one of the managers of the sale. NTT had
offered investors a spread ranging from 13 to 15 basis points.

Japan's Government Bonds Gain as Buyers to Match Change in Benchmark Index

(Bloomberg) -- Japan's government bonds rose, ending
a two-day slide, on speculation investors will purchase the
securities to match a change in a benchmark index.

Nomura Securities Co. is forecast to extend the duration of
its Bond Performance Index by almost twice as much in June as
this month, prompting buying by pension funds and other money
managers. Japan's bonds also gained after U.S. Treasuries
yesterday rose for the first day in seven as yields near a
three-month high attracted investors.

Asian Stocks Climb to One-Week High; Sumitomo Mitsui, BHP Billiton Rise

(Bloomberg) -- Asian stocks rose to the highest in a
week after Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group Inc. forecast higher
profit this year and prices of metals and crude oil climbed.

Sumitomo Mitsui, Japan's No. 3 bank by assets, jumped by
the most in seven weeks after it predicted a 22 percent gain in
net income this year. BHP Billiton Ltd. advanced after copper
prices in New York surged the most in a month and oil rose to a
three-week high.

Boeing starts assembly of 787 Dreamliner

(Reuters) - In building the company's first all-new plane in more than a decade, Boeing has changed everything from what materials it uses to how it constructs the 787, which is slated for its first test flight in late August and delivery next May.




Boeing has outsourced most of the 787's manufacturing to firms in Japan, Italy, South Carolina and elsewhere, while the company itself is concentrating on putting the plane together at its cavernous main facility in Everett, near Seattle.

(Reuters) - Citigroup, which also repeated its "hold" rating on the stock, cited the company's strong outlook.

Neilson's Platinum Asset Shares Will Surge on Debut, Credit Suisse Says

(Bloomberg) -- Shares of Kerr Neilson's Platinum
Asset Management Ltd., Australia's biggest hedge fund, may rise
as much as 37 percent when they start trading on the Australian
Stock Exchange tomorrow, Credit Suisse Group said.

Platinum sold A$561 million ($462 million) of shares to
individuals at A$5 each. The asset manager, which invests in
international stocks and oversees A$22.2 billion, is worth A$6.85
a share, Credit Suisse analyst Arjan van Veen estimates.

Australian Dollar Advances on Investor Appetite for Higher Yielding Assets

(Bloomberg) -- The Australian dollar advanced,
snapping five days of losses, as a rising appetite for risky
investments lured traders to the nation's higher yielding assets.

The currency rose as stock markets from China to the U.S.
climbed yesterday, suggesting investors are searching for higher
returning assets. The local dollar gained against 14 of the 16
most-actively traded currencies this year as investors have been
attracted to Australia's key borrowing cost at a six-year high of
6.25 percent, 1 percentage point above the U.S. rate.

U.S. lawmakers urge FCC to approve Tribune deal

(Reuters) - Under current media ownership rules, a company cannot own a
daily newspaper and a television or radio station in the same
market although media companies do under agency waivers.




Tribune has such arrangements in Fort Lauderdale, Hartford,
Los Angeles and New York and earlier this month asked the
agency to waive restrictions that could prevent it from owning
television station and newspapers in the same city.

Utah joins regional climate fight

(Reuters) - At a meeting of the two Republican governors in Salt Lake
City, Utah joined the Western Regional Climate Action
Initiative with California, Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon,
Washington and the Canadian province of British Columbia.




Schwarzenegger is campaigning with other states for actions
to cut emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases that
scientists have linked to global warming, charging the federal
government is moving too slowly on environmental problems.

Pacific Sunwear posts quarterly net loss

(Reuters) - The operator of PacSun, the largest mall-based chain of surfing-inspired apparel stores, reported a first quarter net loss of $5.1 million, or 7 cents per share, compared with a year-ago net profit of $11.9 million, or 16 cents per share.



Results for the quarter included 3 cents per share in costs for closing 74 demo stores.

(Reuters) - NEW YORK, May 21 - U.S. Treasury debt prices were
mostly higher on Monday, erasing earlier losses, as bond bulls
defended their positions and countered worries that China may
buy less Treasuries and more stocks with their dollar
reserves.




Blackstone Group said China's investment agency planned to
take a stake worth $3 billion, or 10 percent, in the U.S.
private equity firm as it seeks higher returns in booming

Sugar Rises Most in 2 Months as Brazil Currency Gain May Reduce Exports

(Bloomberg) -- Sugar in New York rose the most in
more than two months on speculation that exports from Brazil,
the largest producer, may slow as mills focus on meeting
domestic demand for sweeteners and crop-based fuel.

Mills in Brazil are curbing exports after prices fell to a
23-month low last week and the local currency rallied, reducing
the value of sales paid for in dollars, said Michael McDougall,
senior vice president for Fimat USA LLC in New York. Brazil's
real has risen 10 percent this year, the biggest advance among
the 16 most-actively traded currencies against the dollar.

World Oil Consumption May Contract as Economic Growth Slows, CGES Predicts

(Bloomberg) -- High petroleum prices may cause world
oil consumption to contract as economic growth slows, a London-
based consultant said.

While the global economy has been growing at an annual rate
of more than 4 percent, oil demand will increase less than 1
percent in 2007, about half the normal rate, the Centre for
Global Energy Studies said in its monthly report.

Wheat Rallies as Dry Weather May Damage Crops in Eastern Europe, Australia

(Bloomberg) -- Wheat rose in Chicago, gaining for
the first session in four, on speculation that unusually dry,
warm weather in eastern Europe and Australia may damage crops
and reduce global production.

Dry weather is threatening crops in Ukraine, southwestern
Russia and parts of Moldavia, Romania and Bulgaria, said Drew
Lerner, president of World Weather Inc. in Kansas City, Kansas.
About 30 percent of the crop in Australia, the third-biggest
exporter, remains at risk from drought conditions, Lerner said.

Williams shares soar on unit sale

(Reuters) - Williams, which wants to focus more on its natural gas businesses, said the sale will reduce its risk and lower its borrowing costs. Proceeds from the deal will be largely offset by income taxes, resolution of retained liabilities and transaction costs, Williams said.




Investors cheered the sale, sending Williams shares up more than 7 percent, or the largest one-day gain in nearly a year, in trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

UPDATE 1-Westell sees Q1 loss, to outsource some operations

(Reuters) - The broadband access product provider plans to move the
manufacturing of customer networking equipment and network
service equipment to offshore suppliers, affecting about 300
employees at its Aurora, Illinois facility, it said in a
statement.




Westell expects expenses of 8 cents a share in fiscal 2008
from the move. The product cost savings in fiscal 2009 are
expected to exceed the one-time costs related to outsourcing,
the company said.

Alltel bonds hit widest levels this year on buyout

(Reuters) - "The $24.7 billion buyout by Goldman et al will be a blow
to credit quality because of a rise in leverage," according to
Egan-Jones Rating Co. "With a buyout, a 'BB' rating is
reasonable."




Alltel Corp. is rated "A-minus" by Standard & Poor's, which
is four levels above junk. Egan-Jones said its corporate bond
rating for Alltel may slip one notch to "BB," or two levels
below investment-grade, from "BB+" after an agreement to be
bought by TPG Capital and Goldman Sachs for about $25 billion,
Egan-Jones said.

Oil Is Steady as U.S. Refineries Boost Gasoline Production for the Summer

(Bloomberg) -- Crude oil was little changed in New
York, above $65 a barrel, as refineries stepped up production of
gasoline to meet increased demand for summer.

U.S. refineries have boosted fuel production in recent weeks
after disruptions earlier in the year cut output. Gasoline
inventories rose to 195.2 million barrels the week ended May 11,
the second consecutive weekly increase, according to a U.S.
Energy Department report on May 16. The increase left supplies
7.5 percent below the five year average.

Commission, the private equity firm said it plans to offer
133.3 million common units at $29 and $31 each, for proceeds of
$3.87 billion to $4.13 billion. The IPO may grow to $4.75
billion if another 20 million units are sold to meet demand.




Blackstone announced the terms one day after saying China

U.S. Notes Are Little Changed Near Three-Month Highs on Outlook for Growth

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. 10-year notes were little changed
as last week's decline, which pushed yields to near the highest
in three months, attracted investors who are betting on slower
economic growth and lower interest rates.

Treasuries fell the most since January last week, with 10-
year yields climbing to 4.81 percent, approaching the 2007 high
of 4.90 percent reached on Jan. 26. U.S. notes erased earlier

percent in 2007 from current levels, buoyed by earnings growth,
according to Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc.

``We remain bullish on the outlook for global equities,''

U.K. Working-Day Electricity Price Declines as Generators Boost Capacity

(Bloomberg) -- U.K. power for delivery on the next
working day declined as producers started generation units,
widening the margin of spare capacity compared with previous
forecasts.

U.K. day-ahead power dropped 15 percent to 23 pounds
($45.37) a megawatt hour, from a last traded price of 27 pounds
on May 18 for delivery today, according to prices on Bloomberg
from the energy broker Spectron Group Plc. The average working-
day price last week was 24.25 pounds a megawatt-hour.

European Two-Year Bond Yields Hold Near Five-Year High on ECB Rate Views

(Bloomberg) -- European two-year bond yields held
near the highest in almost five years on speculation the pace of
economic growth in the region will force the European Central
Bank to keep raising interest rates this year.

A report tomorrow may show German investor confidence rose
to the highest in almost a year in May. European debt fell by the
most last week in five after data showed European economies grew
faster than forecast in the first quarter. Futures prices show

Australian, Canadian Dollars to Advance on Commodity Demand, Nomura Says

(Bloomberg) -- Investors should buy so-called commodity
currencies such as the Canadian and Australian dollars as global
economic growth fuels demand for raw materials, said Daisaku Ueno
at Nomura Securities Co.

Commodity demand from China and other nations drove Canada's
dollar to the highest since 1977 against the U.S. currency last
week and pushed Australia's dollar to a 17-year high last month.
Raw materials make up more than half of both nations' exports.

U.S. crime rises as police fight other threats

(Reuters) - The killing of the 22-year-old Kentucky native, who recently graduated university with honors, in a tough neighborhood in Boston's Dorchester district on March 24 sparked weeks of outcry in a city where the murder rate neared a 10-year high last year.




Like Boston, many U.S. cities are struggling to stem a wave of violent crime and murder that has raised questions of whether police are fighting terrorism at the expense of street crime, and whether a widening wealth gap feeds the problem.
