(Reuters) - Total announced layoffs were 55,726 in June, versus 71,115
in May, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc., an
employment consulting firm. June's job cuts were down 17
percent from a year earlier, when they totaled 67,176.
Firms in the financial sector eliminated 9,800 jobs in
June, compared with 6,125 in the apparel industry, which ranked
second in announced layoffs, Challenger said.
